ABSTRACT

Aiming to verify the predictive value of oral narrative structure on reading acquisition, we followed 253 children (first and second graders) during an entire school year, assessing oral narratives and reading performances in five sessions. Transcriptions of oral narratives were represented as word-recurrence graphs to measure connectedness attributes. Connectedness predicted performance in phonological awareness, reading comprehension, and word reading accuracy 3-4 months in advance.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: The advancement in the development of second-generation drugs in the field of antihistamines represents a significant milestone in the management of allergic diseases, targeting the effects of histamine. The efficacy of bilastine in treating allergic disorders has sparked interest in investigating its polymorphism, a crucial property that impacts quality, safety, and effectiveness as per regulatory guidelines. This study examines the polymorphism of bilastine, focusing on two crystalline forms labeled as Form I and Form II. Utilizing advanced analytical techniques, the research explores the structural characteristics and molecular interactions within these forms. Geometric parameters, such as bond lengths, bond angles, and torsion angles, are examined to comprehend molecular conformations and crystal packing arrangements. Hydrogen bonding, covalent bonds, and van der Waals forces contribute to the unique supramolecular arrangements in these forms. This study provides a significant contribution to understanding bilastine's polymorphism, offering critical insights to researchers and regulatory bodies to ensure the quality, efficacy, and safety of antihistamine products. METHODS: The molecular conformation of two bilastine forms was obtained through DFT with the exchange-correlation functional M06-2X and the 6-311 + + G(d,p) basis set, and the results were compared with the experimental X-ray. The atomic coordinates were obtained directly from the crystalline structures, and charge transfer was also investigated using frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), and MEP map in order to evaluate the energies associated with charge transfers and regions of high electron affinity. The geometric and topological parameters and intermolecular interactions in the crystals were analyzed using Hirshfeld Surface.

ABSTRACT

Based on the report of an online analytical session, the text presents a reflection on the vitalizing function of the analyst, highlighting what we call “sufficiently good seduction” similar to Winnicott’s “enough good mother”: seduction as part of the analytical encounter, and must keep itself operating from an ethical position. We propose that seduction matches erotization, both in the mother-baby dyad and in the analyst-analysand pair; developing such ideas from Luís Claudio Figueiredo and Dianne Elise. We think of seduction as a therapeutic strategy of vitalization – being linked to Eros in its broad sense. We used the contributions of Dianne Elise when she associates the mother-baby dyad with the analytical pair, proposing the metaphor of dance as parallel to the creative and erotic vitality that interlacing the movements of the referred pairs. We also point out that, in the form of remote session the case presented had safeguarded the vigour of the meeting.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Language has been used as a privileged window to investigate mental processes. More recently, descriptions of psychopathological symptoms have been analyzed with the help of natural language processing tools. An example is the study of speech organization using graph theoretical approaches that began approximately 10 years ago. After its application in different areas, there is a need to better characterize what aspects can be associated with typical and atypical behavior throughout the lifespan, given the variables related to aging as well as biological and social contexts. The precise quantification of mental processes assessed through language may allow us to disentangle biological/social markers by looking at naturalistic protocols in different contexts. In this review, we discuss 10 years of studies in which word recurrence graphs were adopted to characterize the chain of thoughts expressed by individuals while producing discourse. Initially developed to understand formal thought disorder in the context of psychotic syndromes, this line of research has been expanded to understand the atypical development in different stages of psychosis and differential diagnosis (such as dementia) as well as the typical development of thought organization in school-age children/teenagers in naturalistic and school-based protocols. We comment on the effects of environmental factors, such as education and reading habits (in monolingual and bilingual contexts), in clinical and nonclinical populations at different developmental stages (from childhood to older adulthood, considering aging effects on cognition). Looking toward the future, there is an opportunity to use word recurrence graphs to address complex questions that consider biological/social factors within a developmental perspective in typical and atypical contexts.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, different natural language processing tools measured aspects related to narratives' structural, semantic, and emotional content. However, there is a need to better understand the limitations and effectiveness of speech elicitation protocols. The graph-theoretical analysis applied to short narratives reveals lower connectedness associated with negative symptoms even in the early stages of psychosis, but emotional topics seem more informative than others. We investigate the interaction between connectedness and emotional words with negative symptoms and educational level in participants with and without psychosis. For that purpose, we used a speech elicitation protocol based on three positive affective pictures and calculated the proportion of emotional words and connectedness measures in the first-episode psychosis (FEP) group (N: 24) and a control group (N: 33). First, we replicated the association between connectedness and negative symptoms (R2: 0.53, p: 0.0049). Second, the more positive terms, the more connected the narrative was, exclusively under psychosis and in association with education, pointing to an interaction between symptoms and formal education. Negative symptoms were independently associated with connectedness, but not with emotional words, although the associations with education were mutually dependent. Together, education and symptoms explained almost 70 % of connectedness variance (R2: 0.67, p < 0.0001), but not emotional expression. At this initial stage of psychosis, education seems to play an important role, diminishing the impact of negative symptoms on the narrative connectedness. Negative symptoms in FEP impact narrative connectedness in association with emotional expression, revealing aspects of social cognition through a short and innocuous protocol.

ABSTRACT

This article promotes a dialogue some of Bion's concepts and those of post-Bionian psychoanalysts (Ogden, Ferro, Rocha Barros and Chuster), looking in particular at psychoanalytic intuition, reverie and the alpha function. How can we think about the connection between reverie and intuition? Could the analyst's state of reverie have at its centre - before and beyond the sensuous, in the infra- and ultra-sensuous - the analyst's capacity for intuition? The paper presents a disturbing experience of an analyst in her consulting room, looking at how the concepts work in the clinical material. The clinical material sustains the hypothesis that reverie is an evolution of psychoanalytic intuition, and that intuition occurs between caesuras, which is supported by Bion's proposal of no memory, no desire, no prior understanding, that is, negative capacity.

ABSTRACT

Language experience shapes the gradual maturation of speech production in both native (L1) and second (L2) languages. Structural aspects like the connectedness of spontaneous narratives reveal this maturation progress in L1 acquisition and, as it does not rely on semantics, it could also reveal structural pattern changes during L2 acquisition. The current study tested whether L2 lexical retrieval associated with vocabulary knowledge could impact the global connectedness of narratives during the initial stages of L2 acquisition. Specifically, the study evaluated the relationship between graph structure (long-range recurrence or connectedness) and L2 learners' oral production in the L2 and L1. Seventy-nine college-aged students who were native speakers of English and had received classroom instruction in either L2-Spanish or L2-Chinese participated in this study. Three tasks were used: semantic fluency, phonemic fluency and picture description. Measures were operationalized as the number of words per minute in the case of the semantic and phonemic fluency tasks. Graph analysis was carried out for the picture description task using the computational tool SpeechGraphs to calculate connectedness. Results revealed significant positive correlations between connectedness in the picture description task and measures of speech production (number of correct responses per minute) in the phonemic and semantic fluency tasks. These correlations were only significant for the participants' L2- Spanish and Chinese. Results indicate that producing low connectedness narratives in L2 may be a marker of the initial stages of L2 oral development. These findings are consistent with the pattern reported in the early stages of L1 literacy. Future studies should further explore the interactions between graph structure and second language production proficiency, including more advanced stages of L2 learning and considering the role of cognitive abilities in this process.

ABSTRACT

Resumos This paper is a theoretical reflection on some potentialities of the aesthetic moment: this is configured, at the same time, as a refuge from the storms of the present, as a possibility to strengthen the individual's ties with life, and as an opening to the future. The English pianist James Rhodes's relationship with classical music, as narrated by him in his autobiography, is presented as an expression of such potentialities. During its argumentation, the text describes the aesthetic moment as a moment of loosening of the boundaries of the self, which updates, to a certain extent, the infant's primordial relationship with the maternal object. The article emphasizes the limits of the aesthetic moment, as it does not replace the need for human interaction, while indicating its potential as a kind of bearable waiting place which keeps the horizon of the encounter open.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Urodynamic studies (UDSs) are a set of tests that assess the storage and emptying of urine, and they are widely used by gynecologists and urologists in the management of urinary incontinence (UI), despite the discussion about its indications. The objectives of the present study were to verify whether UDSs are routinely used in the conservative and surgical approaches to female UI, their other clinical indications, and to compare the responses of Brazilian gynecologists and urologists. METHODS: The present is an opinion survey applied from August 2020 to January 2021 through a semistructured questionnaire about the clinical practice sent by e-mail to all participants. The responses were compared through statistical analyses. RESULTS: Of the 329 participants, 238 were gynecologists (72.3%) and 91, urologists (27.7%). Most gynecologists (73.5%) and urologists (86.6%) do not request UDSs before the conservative treatment of UI; but UDSs are indicated in the preoperative period of anti-incontinence surgeries. Most participants request UDSs in the initial approach to overactive bladder (gynecologists: 88.2%; urologists: 96.7%), and the urologist has greater chance to request this study (odds ratio [OR] = 3.9). For most participants, it is necessary to request uroculture before the UDSs. CONCLUSION: Most Brazilian gynecologists and urologists who participated in the present study do not request UDSs before the conservative treatment of UI, according to national and internacional guidelines, and often request it before the surgical treatment for female UI. The indication of this exam in the initial approach of idiopathic overactive bladder should be reviewed by the participants.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Creativity is a multidimensional phenomenon that involves both individual and environmental elements. The cultural environment in which an individual is immersed and the way in which he becomes acculturated can influence his creative performance. In this study creativity, acculturation and international experience of multicultural youth were investigated. Participants were thirty-nine children and adolescents who had lived in at least two countries, being 22 (56%) females and 17 (44%) males, aged between 6 and 15 years (M = 11.07, SD = 2.56), and their guardians (23 mothers, seven fathers and nine couples). Three instruments were used: Short Acculturation Scale, Children's Figural Creativity Test and questionnaire on experience in other cultures. The results indicated that multicultural children had higher than average creativity index, boosted by Emotivity and Cognitive Aspects factors. Most had high levels of acculturation and adopted acculturative integration strategy. Participants with higher levels of acculturation and who had returned to their home country, after their experience abroad were more creative. Children and adolescents who had lived in more than four countries had higher level of acculturation. School, family, social relationships, and language were the aspects most indicated as facilitators in the international experience.

ABSTRACT

Low-order streams are important places for river formation and are highly vulnerable to changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Thus, the land-use/land-cover plays an important role in the maintenance of water quality. However, only land-use/land-cover composition may not explain the spatial variation in water quality, because it does not consider land-use/land-cover configuration and forest cover pattern. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the forest cover pattern effects on water quality on low-order streams located in an agricultural landscape. Applying a paired watershed method, we selected two watersheds classified according to their morphometry and average slope to discard other physical factors that could influence the water quality. Land-use/land-cover pattern was analyzed for composition and forest cover configuration using landscape metrics, including the riparian zone composition. Water quality variables were obtained every two weeks during the hydrological year. This way, watersheds had similar morphometry, slope, and land-use/land-cover composition but differed in forest cover pattern. Watershed with more aggregated forest cover had a better water quality than the other one. The results show that forest cover contributes to water quality maintenance, while forest fragmentation influences the water quality negatively, especially in sediment retention. Agricultural practices are sources of sediment and nutrients to the river, especially in steep relief. Thus, in addition to land-use/land-cover composition, forest cover pattern must be considered in management of low-order streams in tropical agricultural watersheds.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to provide a bibliometric analysis and mapping of existing scientific papers, focusing on microalgae cultivation coupled with biomass production and bioremediation of wastewater from agricultural industries, including cassava, dairy, and coffee. Using the Web of Science (WoS) database for the period 1996-2021, a search was performed using a keyword strategy, aiming at segregating the papers in groups. For the first search step, the keywords "wastewater treatment", AND "microalgae", AND "cassava" OR "dairy" OR "coffee" were used, resulting in 59 papers. For the second step, the keywords "wastewater treatment" AND "biomass productivity" AND "microalgae" AND "economic viability" OR "environmental impacts" were used, which resulted in 34 articles. In these papers, keywords such as "carbon dioxide biofixation" and "removal of nutrients by the production of biomass by microalgae" followed by "environmental and economic impacts" were highlighted. Some of these papers presented an analysis of the economic feasibility of the process, which reveal the state-of-the-art setup required to make the cultivation of microalgae economically viable. Researches focusing on the efficiency of microalgae biomass harvesting are needed to improve the integration of microalgae production in industrial eco-parks using wastewater to achieve the global goal of bioremediation and clean alternatives for renewable energy generation.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of malocclusion and dental caries on oral health- related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adolescents and the differences between adoles- cents' self-reports and caregiver's proxy reports. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,612 Brazil- ian adolescents and 1,168 caregivers. Adolescents completed the Child Perceptions Questionnaire and caregivers completed the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Question- naire. Malocclusion (dental esthetic index) and dental caries (DMFT) were documented. Multiple Poisson regression was conducted. Results: A self-reported model demonstrated that adolescents with malocclusion had an impact on emotional (PR=1.14; 95 percent confidence interval [95% CI=1.03 to 1.26) and social domains (PR=1.35; 95% CI=1.20 to 1.50). Dental caries had an impact on the emotional domain (prevalence ratio [PR]=1.34; 95% CI=1.21 to 1.48). The caregiver model showed that malocclusion had an impact on oral symptoms (PR=1.12; 95% CI=1.03 to 1.21), functional limitations (PR=1.18; 95% CI= 1.05 to 1.33), and emotional (PR=1.23; 95% CI=1.10 to 1.54) and social domains (PR=1.22; 95% CI=1.02 to 1.45). Those with dental caries felt an impact on oral symptoms (PR=1.09; 95% CI=1.01 to 1.19), functional limitations (PR=1.18; 95% CI=1.05 to 1.33) and social domains (PR=1.24; 95% CI=1.04 to 1.45). Conclusions: Adolescents reported a negative impact on OHRQoL both in relation to dental caries and malocclusion. Caregivers observed the impact of oral conditions on more domains than the adolescents reported.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Ophthalmology provides a vast field of knowledge necessary for forensic medicine and medical expertise. The present article aimed to review the information on criminal and civil medical expertise, the repercussions of death, and the postmortem findings that the eye examination can provide. Ocular expertise has been shown to be complex and multifaceted, providing important tools to classify bodily injuries, verify work capacity, investigate the cause of death, and estimate the time of death.
